| AUDE (11) | GARD (30) | HERAULT (34) | LOZERE (48) | The Région Languedoc-Roussillon is situated in the south-west of france and borders Spain and the Mediterranean. It is made up of the five departments Aude (11), Gard (30), Hérault (34), Loreze (48) and Pyrénées-Orientales (66). Languedoc Roussillon is renowned for its wine (Pays d'Oc). It is rich in history, particularly the Cathars and the Knights Templars. The area has many mountain-top castles, vineyards and superb ancient cities to be explores - the most famous and popular being Carcassonne. This is a city not to be missed if you are visiting the area. It is easy to get to the ancient city. Parking is just outside the walls and from there you can explore inside the walls of this most remarkable place. Also, take the horse and cart ride for a 20 minute trip around the perimeter - even if you don't understand French, it is an enjoyable experience. In the south, the Aude offers superb scenery and many wonderful places to visit - such as the Cathar castles, spa-towns and the Mediterranean coast. The Pyrénées-Orientales takes you into the mountains that border Spain. If you are in this area, take a day-trip to the tiny country of Andorra (Andorre). More information coming soon. |
